When polar explorers trek to the North or the South Pole they subject their footwear to the most demanding conditions imaginable. They are a decent pair of boots and seem like they would be nice and warm in the winter. The sole had some good grip though, so I'm sure they would have done well on the ice. Cold feet and blisters, that might not be given a second thought in other situations, can be fatal in this environment. I know I have large calves but that doesn't mean I have big ankle and so they looked ok from the side but from the front the ankles were all wrinkled and bungled looking while the tops were very tight.

The toe box is roomy and the padding is good. But, there's a huge upside: Allow us to introduce Backcountry's European sister site - Bergfreunde! I always wish that boots came in half sizes but they rarely do. I wore them with crampons while hiking across glaciers, I walked over snow, Ice water etc. They didn't let me down for a moment. As I walked, they kept slipping off my heel and it felt as if they would slip off entirely. Based on the helpful reviews preceding mine, I purchased my size 8 and 9. After the first couple of wears they are easy to slip into without having to yank them on.
The calf fits snug so don't plan on trying to get your inside, but they will protect from the elements. The larger size also accomodates my orthotic which is good because the boots have no arch support.
