Besseggen Ridge: Hiking one of Norway's greatest day walks

My first night in Norway was spent at Bessheim Mountain Lodge, where I indulged in reindeer when in Rome… and rested up ahead of a big day to come. Most people choose to hike Besseggen this way. Gjendebåtene

The first departure this summer is Friday, 5June, last departure is Sunday, 4 October. Also do not pack more than you need, as you don not want to carry a heavy back pack when climbing the steepest parts. Besseggen hiking map Besseggen is located in the municipality of Vågå, in the eastern part of Jotunheimen. From there, a free shuttle takes the hikers to the trailhead and the boat. Even when sun and good weather are forecasted, the weather conditions can change quickly.

There's a reason for the Besseggen being one of the most popular mountain hikes in Norway. Should you however wish to do so, it is possible to spend the night at either Gjendesheim- or Memurubu mountain lodges, depending on where you started out from, and take on the journey back fresh and rested the next morning. But I recommend a ferry. Other than the ridge, there is nothing particularly unusual about this hike. The hike took exactly 7 hours including several short breaks to catch our breath, and a 15 minute stop for lunch. The scenery is beautiful, Norway at its best.

On your journey, you may very well encounter a herd of reindeer, and you may taste fresh clean mountain water right from the source. With the dark blue waters of the Bessvatn lake on one side, and the emerald green waters of Gjende on the other, the journey across the ridge offers great views of the unique scenery, which the area is well known for. When we did it in June, we were against a wind which I think was 40-50 knots, but it was worth it; the views are unlike any I have ever seen. The hike from Gjendesheim to Memurubu is 8 miles.

Generally, this is the preferred direction is considered a bit safer since you'll be ascending Besseggen Ridge the mid-way ridge which separates the two bodies of water instead of coming down it. Renting equipment can be done at Gjendesheim, Bessheim and Hindsæter. This is a very popular hike so you will not be alone in the mountains. This is a great spot to catch your breath, and take in the scenery. When you are one kilometer from Gjendesheim there will be a fork in the trail. If you plan your trip outside the high season and on weekdays, there are fewer people around, and you can better enjoy the tranquillity of nature in these wonderful surroundings.

Hike the Besseggen Ridge, Besseggen Ridge Staging Area

The mountain lodge at bot Gjendesheim and Memuburu serves food. Here you pass large piles of rocks that serves as a marker for the highest point of the hike. You will start walking uphill immediately. Which is why I recommend camping out there! What we did, and what I recommend, is taking your time and doing it in two days. Before long, the tasty part of the scramble was over and I progressed on two feet, turning around to take in the views as often as it was practical to do so.

Looking around, I took a moment to gaze across Lake Gjende to the mountains, valleys and rivers standing so invitingly, while Besshø watched over us imposingly. Here you will get to embark on personal challenges, crossing demanding passages, and putting your fear of heights to the test, which will no doubt leave you with a great sense of mastery in the end. If you have two days to spare and wish to do a fair amount of walking, i would suggest the following: Day 1: Arrive at Gjendesheim by rental car if you have one in the mid morning. Should you be in doubt whether you can accomplish the Besseggen, we recommend that you start at Gjendesheim. This is one outstanding hike. This is better of two reasons. The total hike is about 8 miles, so it can easily be done in one day, just don't forget the ferry schedule! Day 2: You can either take the boat back from Memurubu to Gjendesheim, walk back the way you came or walk along the shores of the lake.

Besseggen hike

Harald, the present skipper, is fourth generation, and you might see the fifth generation running along by the quayside. It can be very windy and cold up here, so come prepared! Beyond all of that, the snow-capped mountains of Jotunheimen lingered, sending my mind into a state of restlessness as it processed all of the peaks it wanted me to climb.
