Like Lyla, Derrick missed the obvious so many times. Lyla as a character was painful to read at times for me. Lauren Barnholdt knows how to make you remember what it was like to be a teenager, and she knows how to make these characters come alive. These halfhearted angsty notes deflate this little souffle of a story. I am giving Lyla's story 3 out of 5 stars. Sean was forceful, probing, mockingly intent on keeping Serena off balance.

To teach her a lesson, the H plants a kiss on her to let her know that trouble can be I really wish this had been titled, Nothing but Trouble because from the gitgo the heroine is in need of rescuing from one calamity or another. She seemed a little self-centered and kind of stupid actually considering some of the things she just seemed to be completely deluded about. That alone was enough to annoy me. He seems to enjoy it however, and frequently has some quite dry and witty comments on whatever mix up the h finds herself in. There could have been more to the story though, more development of Lyla and Beckett's relationship.
It's such a cute idea for a book, but seriously she turned it into something so boring! She always lied, to her boyfriend, to her friends, to Beckett, to her mother, to herself. The book was really lame! And gets a ride with Beckett, a boy she knows only by reputation. Lyla and her boyfriend Derrick are a perfect couple; she cares about him, he cares about her, they look good together, they get along well. The secrecy and subterfuge and sneaky business is so ridiculous, honestly. Select singles in the Format field. Of course, that will be horribly embarrassing. But when she receives it the first morning of her senior trip to Florida her life is sent into a tailspin.
And really, there is no love triangle. Though the concept of the storyline taking place while on vacation is fun, it honestly made no sense. The friendship between the three is shrouded in her hurt, she feels like they betrayed her trust, and they have been estranged for almost as long as they wrote the emails. It reads more like the 70s despite being written in 1989. I'm really disappointed in Lauren Barnholdt. I wanted to read this because it sounded like a nice summer read but also one that would have some depth. This was an easy and fast read.

I loved Beckett but Derrick just got on my nerves. However, as time went on, she definitely grew on me. Interesting concept, but it failed. But I felt like I understood him and could even relate some. But that was part of what made me love this book. So she was definitely a pretty believable character.
I also love the premise of writing to your older self and seeing how those goals and promises line up with how life turns out three years later. But I liked his archetype and role in the story. There is a serious lack of logic. I wonder if he had some sixth sense about me losing my virginity to him this weekend. The story stars with the h dressed in a bunny girl outfit and a rain coat almost being attacked outside the club she works at, until the H intervenes. Who else would get sidetracked by flooring options when she is imaging a romantic encounter with Derrick? When I saw this go up on Edelweiss, I requested it before I realised who the author was. At a party the h is jealous that the H is looking at some woman and has a certain look in his eyes, but the h soon gets into another scrape when one of the male guests recognizes her from her prior club job and makes some gropey moves.
Perhaps Serena had rushed into accepting work in a nightclub just shy of respectable. The h's mum died when she was 14, the h's father remarried a conniving gold digger and then died. Maybe something will happen in the next two books. There is an important friendship aspect to this book. Then one in London and one in Australia, after they made the decision to emigrate from South Africa. They wrote emails to themselves on freshmen year to be delivered to them before graduation.
Her secret and what her friends did to make her feel betrayed was really only hinted at, even though I had an idea of what may have happened. First of all, sorry if I make some mistakes english is not my native language! I thought her This is the first book that I bought on a whim and it is the last. I felt like there were no friendship between her and the Main character. I understand that the premise is shaking up her life again, and looking deeper into her trust issues, and to do that she has to realize that she hasn't really fixed them and what she does to cover it up. She and her husband love to travel and have been back to Africa twice in the past few years. The fatherless boys were handful enough, but their arrogant guardian uncle, Sean Wentworth, was the kind of challenge her troubled past made her ill-equipped to deal with.
