The M6 is a mechanical camera, that happens to have a meter. It takes a bit of time to rewind the film back with them. At this point the film is now pulled past the curtains and if there is a light leak, it would leave the streaking as in the image. That is the best camera. I decided to give film a try, and began looking for a film camera. I had to go back and make notes so not to miss some of the points you make.
If for you the M4 is the right choice, then thats brilliant — its your cash to save! I will keep my Fujifilm X100S, which is a little wonder and great for point-and-shoot at parties or family get-togethers. I like the light-meter, but I can understand people have feelings about it. I personally found taking a reading of an appropriately reflective object the most suitable process for me. But like the M4-P, there is no shinny glossy black paint finish, just chrome. So, for purists I am a heathen or something. The viewfinder is clean and uncluttered. I came to similar conclusion for slightly different reasons.
In any case, I do want to get one M6 whenever I can. I like the parts that the M-A is made of, and I liked the idea of a new camera. All in all a great camera! It is a camera that has its own well deserved following and is a pleasure to shoot with. The leather grip fits perfectly and feels softer and more comfortable to hold than the old vulcanite grips. A Leica is meant to be something that you learn to use, something that you have to develop a relationship with. The M6 is good all round. Its a feeling that it is truly yours, yours and no-one else has used pawed it.
You will hear phases like best bang for the buck, or the M6 as an entry level camera to the world of Leica, but I feel those phrases are quite rude to what is to my experience is a superior camera. A lot of doubts where hanging over me about this camera, was it going to live up to what I hoped? And more than anything else, it just feels new! I do wonder if the height of the M6 ttl was just an exercise in getting people used to it for the M7… Pure speculation though. That dial on the back — as I go on about in my — is an abomination that does nothing for the sense of overall quality. I think that the Leica M6 is the best M-series analogue rangefinder camera that Leica ever made! I mean a M3 in good conditions : impressive! Like the M7 that came after, and unlike the M5 that came before, the meter in the M6 takes its reading from a large spot in the centre of the frame. The funny thing was, I never really regretted selling the Leica M6. This might be an issue for some, but in my view it is a a big step up from the early separate more fiddly take up spool.
Sometimes I wish the time wheel would be a bit bigger so it is easier to change exposure time. Part of me appreciates their simplicity, I can certainly see how they work so well for other people. This is pretty much the basis of my arguments for the. Why I think the M6 is the best Leica rangefinder I have been through a lot of cameras in my time, and I have owned a few different Leica bodies. Through a combination established designs and quite small refinements, it brings little that is new to the table really. It is fast, tiny, very well-built, plenty sharp from wide open, and quick to focus with a finger tab. I can simply shoot, worry free.
Well, the big problem is I am also happy — in fact happier — shooting how I do with the Leica M7. What do you know about that? The hotshoe is the biggest M6 plus for my style of photography. It has even come with me to the States for work and a vacation to see the family, with absolutely no problems. We had many adventures together and it taught me about photography all over again. Best to test by setting up 3 markers at set spaces in feet, note what distance they are from you and then focus on them and see if they are sharp. I have some time to work out whether or not I still feel so strongly about the way the M7 works for me, or if after some more time with my M3 I am more happy with a fully manual camera.
