Today we have our own boats, and are accumulating ever more experience and knowhow about seaweed farming. Located along the E10 a few kilometers east from Ramberg, this flat, sandy beach often provides scenic reflections of the surrounding mountain terrain. Depending on the tides, Storsandnes can provide a good variety of shots, especially in the twilight of winter. It's possible to keep mother plants in tanks on land, and induce them to produce spores when needed, just like with plants. Drying is a huge subject, and there are a number of different ways to achieve it through different technlogies, but we only have experience with this one method.

Uttakleiv Beach — Vestvågøy 12km north from Leknes. The future of seaweed cultivation looks bright, and it should have no problems finding it's place among the rest of the excellent seafood exports from Norway. It works by circulating air using powerful fans and an industrial dehumidifier, after about 30 hours everything is completely dry. Winged Kelp seems to be doing better and will grow in shallow water 5 meters deep, or even less, as long as the conditions are rough and the currents strong. Bryozoa usually shows up in late June, but it can vary from season to season.

In big winter storms from the north, the crashing waves here can almost be unreal as they pound the coastline. We wanted to scale up, but since every new step was a step into unknown territory we tread carefully. When you think of seaweed, what comes to mind? The ropes are shipped in styrofoam containers each with 600 meters of rope, ready to be deployed directly. We were also able to rent workers, boats and land facility from them. Aiming both at retail and restaurant markets, they asked us to develop a flexible and recognisable identity to help them launch their brand. Preferably the seaweed would stay at sea for as long as possible, but we have to start harvesting early enough to get the entire crop harvested, transported and processed before summer.

Harvesting is the most intensive phase of production, and the cost cutting potential is huge. Parking is in the obvious parking area on the right side of the beach.

It used to be that I would rarely see another photographer here, but in recent years it seems people are heading here more and more to escape the relative crowds at Uttakleiv and Haukland. The crushed seaweed is the starting point for all of our dried seaweed products. Seaweed production starts with the seedlings. The organization is founded by companies that have identified a common goal in developing the market for seaweed products, as well as the products themselves, and is coordinated by The Royal Norwegian Society for Development Norges Vel. Hopen Fisk is a fish processing company that is known for their excellent high quality products of herring, fish roe and halibut. This is necessary both for deployment, maintenance and harvesting. The founder, Åsbjørn Karlsen, has more than 40 years of experience from research and development in the most prominent institution in the country.

The beach does have a tendency to collect seaweed, often leaving it with a cluttered appearance, except at low tide. You will no doubt pass this beach multiple times on any Lofoten trip. Rather than a single beach, the north side of Gimsøy offers a series of small, but scenic little beaches. Many big name photographers have come here to photograph the wave action over the last couple years. Yttersand Beach — Moskenesøy 39km west from Leknes Yttersand, located on the northern tip of Moskenesøy is a narrow strip of sand at high tide and a large, flat rippled-sand beach at low tide.

And on a summer evening as the sun hangs above the sea in the north, there is not much better than a barefoot stroll through the waves or a nice driftwood-fire to bring in the new day.
