The first two were good but I felt that this sequel wasn't really needed. In the end, this may be worth checking out on video as long as you don't want a good story but just gory action. The only goal that isn't about revenge is that of Johnny Depp's. On the performances front,Antonio Banderas continues to personify Mariachi, with Salma Hayek well cast as his love interest and good support from Johnny Depp,Mickey Rourke and William Dafoe, not to mention the bodacious Eva Mendes. Cucuy, however, is promptly killed by Chambers while El Mariachi escapes from captivity and calls his friends Lorenzo and Fideo to assist him in his mission. Although the first two movies were simple 'revenge' films which served to give the shoot-outs their purpose; this movie tries to embellish this idea with a few sub-plots which frankly just don't work. Antonio Banderas returns as El Mariachi, reprising his the role from Desperado that made him a name in Hollywood.
This is not to say that it is all edge of the seat stuff, but if spectacle and bangs is all you are after then this should do the job nicely. I liked the happy ending for all parties, although Depp's character could've lost a few extra body parts. It feels like something that Robert Rodriguez wrote in his sleep. All in all, a fun, flamboyant, action filled movie with beautiful scenery that got tripped up a little on its' various subplots, losing the viewer in the process at times. I was bored throughout and even though he returns with his trademark comic-book violence, this time round it just seemed to be one big yawn-fest. Its narrative is feeble, its caricatures squeezed into the plot, and even much of the action is repetitive. It works a little for this film since the actors on screen actually do a good enough job.
I can understand why actor wannabes like Banderas, Mickey Rourke, and Enrique Iglesias!!! It immediately communicates the two themes of this album: Mexican Pride and good old fashion Rock and Roll. What happened to you, man? You don't view a film like this in the same way you view a Kubrick film. The desperado returns with his two capable cohorts Lorenzo and Fideo. Instead Salma gets killed from the start and Banderas becomes the kind of Mexi-can Superhero. I now understand why there were only about 10 people in the 200 seat theater in which I saw the movie. Well first of all, the plot outline.
None of it moves slowly simply because it has more than enough going on to fill the time but that's the problem to be honest. The reason Sands contacted El Mariachi for this is due to a past, unresolved conflict between El Mariachi and the general. The simple descriptor for the score would be big, bold and Leone-esque. But overall i wasn't overly impressed as i have seen movie's about, Mexican Leberations before! While monitoring Barillo's activities, Ramírez meets Billy Chambers, an American fugitive who has been living under the protection of Barillo, but can no longer stomach the horrible tasks he's been forced to carry out for him. Antonio Banderas - as great as he is in this flick he takes shotgun to Johnny Depp's lead. Many years before, El Mariachi and his wife Carolina confronted Marquez in a shootout and wounded the general; in retaliation, Marquez took the lives of Carolina and their daughter in an ambush. However the involvement of drug lord Barillo and various other groups soon complicate matters causing bullets to come from all sides.
Haunted and scarred by tragedy, El Mariachi has retreated into a life of isolation. Johnny Depp steals the show in his supporting role, and seems to be having the most fun. In the film, El Mariachi is recruited by agent Sheldon Sands to kill Armando Barillo , a Mexican drug lord who is planning a against the. Just take my word for it. This isn't a stab at the director himself, but everybody. Mendes capture's him and because of Depp saw that Barillo Ho everybody thought was dead was alive, Depp's eyes were taken out, Depp seems no treat anymore.
Plenty of blood is shed, lots of powerful artillery is fired, and action sequences provide astounding car crashes and fiery explosions. From a sequel of Desperado I would have expected more of Salma and Banderas as the passional Latino couple. Our hero, El Mariachi Antonio Banderas barely has any lines. Blades came up with his character's bass line motif and Banderas embellished his own theme. His primary influence was 's , specifically. Sorry Robert, if a bigger budget means we have to suffer this, then please go back to the low budget movies that made your name, in those you were brilliant; here, merely less than average. The President questions the loyalty of his people, but in the end finds out that they are the only ones he can trust! Antonio Banderas did a pretty good job which is surprising since I don't really like him.
The main problem I had with the movie is the plot just got too convoluted. Because I liked the main goal of the movie, getting the money when the government and guerilla are fighting, I give this movie a 5 out of 10 very generous. The story is stupid and the film looks like a kung fu flick from the '70s with flying people during the acrobatic fights. Depp himself played a very good role, setting every body against themselves and running the show, but like i said Mendes outfoxed him. Although in the end she got what she deserved, she impressed me. And that's saying a lot.
In a world where filmmakers are content on releasing poor sequels in order to cash in, 'Mexico' is no exception. A competent movie of intrigue and death with a good dose of wry humor thrown in. It's completely out of shape and a down right stupid movie that wouldn't be worth a penny. Are you completely out of your mind? This film is just woefully bad. At the same time, El Mariachi seeks revenge against a corrupt general responsible for the death of his wife, Carolina. The direction is uneven and consequently the movie proves to be more ridiculously lame than stylish. The movie looks wonderful, and there are scads of extras in this movie, and they are listed on the product page, so I won't get into them.
