And they are just different. I had certainly never heard anything quite like it before. So good, and so relevant today. And then there was what became phase three, after Pink Floyd was retrieved by guitarist David Gilmour who had replaced Syd Barrett and restored to their pre- eminent position in the rock hierarchy. Animals is the one album I simply have to listen to from start to end. Throughout their sordid career, the band fought against label expectations, their own fame, the interior of their minds, and each other. Ummagumma was the last album to feature a group photograph on the front, with a breakdown of their musical equipment on the back. The low place of Atom Heart Mother on this list is less an indictment of the album than a testament to the extraordinary music Pink Floyd would produce in the coming decades. And what they proved conclusively was that Pink Floyd was considerably more than the sum of its parts. Quad copies of all three are quite scarce. The band has remained with this label ever since, and all albums from Wish You Were Here on were issued on this label. A chorus sings gibberish as washes of psychedelic errata zoom in and out. All three are decidedly pleasant pop tunes that warrant a good listen. The album was immediately pronounced sacred by the small cult of flower children and it remains the musical Mecca for British psychedelia.
The overall theme — the futility of war — was never going to be a barrel of laughs but without the other members distinctive sense of drama the atmosphere of unremitting gloom becomes overwhelming.
