The first step in that process is to call for consultation, partly with authorities and partly with residents. More than 20 million tonnes of oil and other energy products are handled. Half of this is made up of residual products from the forest industry. It has the same power and the same price as standard fossil standard diesel. The port receives 2,500 calls by tankers each year and half of all the crude oil that enters Sweden does so via the Port of Gothenburg. This means everyone can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions regardless of whether they drive a car, tractor or truck.

Tall oil is the renewable raw material in green diesel that is the most climate efficient of those currently on the market. But in order to reach the target of three million cubic meters renewable, more investments are needed and an important part is a possible new facility. In June 2015, the next step was taken in the development towards renewable fuels with the launch of Preem Evolution Petrol. It is then refined to diesel specs at Preem’s refinery in Gothenburg. Hydrogenated vegetable oil consists of a vegetable oil or animal fats refined using hydrogen under the influence of a catalyzer in order to raise quality, turning it into a fuel for diesel engines. The agreement provides for increased collaboration between the companies around fossil-free hydrogen for biofuel production, electrification and electricity supply.

Using Preem Evolution Diesel instead of fossil diesel cuts fossil carbon dioxide emissions by up to 46 percent. The plant will contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25,000 tonnes per year from the process, and emissions in the transport sector are expected to fall by around 230,000 tonnes per year when biofuels replace diesel and petrol. The separated carbon dioxide is compressed into liquid form and then transported to a storage site deep in the ground. The expanded facility enables Preem to modify the chemical structure of the tall oil molecules to improve its cold properties making it possible to increase the proportion of renewable fuel in the diesel. Remove capacity bottleneck Hydrogen is currently obtained as a side product from a gasoline component plant, and there has long been a hydrogen deficiency that limited production of renewable fuels at the refinery. It has the same effect and price as our regular diesel.

It is also the site of the largest storage facility in Sweden, supplying the whole of western Sweden with petrol, diesel and other oil-based products. Preem Evolution Diesel will be available at 366 of Preem filling stations for private motorists and heavy traffic from 9 April. Preem will also seek permission to install a so-called electrolytic tube that produces hydrogen from electricity. The renewable content in Preem Evolution Petrol is currently 10 per cent, which is twice as high as regular petrol. Hydrogen gas is currently generated mainly from fossil natural gas, which gives rise to carbon dioxide emissions. Several refineries and storage companies operate at the port.

Preem is also planning for a future expansion of the hydrogen plant to further increase the production of green fuels. Preem Evolution Diesel contains the highest proportion of renewable fuel in conventional standard diesel on the market. If all goes as planned, the new plant would be completed in 2023 at the earliest. Preem Evolution Diesel is produced in part using tall oil, a residual product from the Swedish forest and paper industry. Other vegetable oils and animal residuals are used as raw materials in addition to tall oil. By producing hydrogen gas from fossil-free electricity instead, these emissions can be avoided. A challenge for Preem is that the cold Swedish climate severely restricts the amount of green tall oil or other renewable fuel that can be processed together with the crude oil.

The new hydrogen plant will have a capacity of 18 500 Nm3 per hour and derived from fossil gas from the Swedegas network in Gothenburg. The project included a new factory line and reactor. Preem will also seek to produce hydrogen from electricity. Most of our stations are situated in the triangle Malmö, Gothenburg and Stockholm. Our stations are strategically located along motorways, at ports and in industrial districts. In order to implement these changes, Preem has to apply for a new environmental permit with the authorities that will cover both the planned and existing activities.
