Riding Shotgun (Red Ryan #1) by William W. Johnstone

Riding shotgun

Even though the writing could be better, I love books that feature horses, I appreciate reading a book about a strong female and overall I enjoyed the story, the setting and I liked the characters, notably Cig the lead female and the relationship with her two teenagers and her sister. She goes on to say that she hopes the book helps readers forget their troubles, even if just for a short while. It seems everywhere they go they meet trouble as a passenger. Here's the problem, though: there's also racism, and sexism. I received this from Netgalley. There's painful dialog coming at the reader from left and right. A recently widowed woman learns her beautiful younger sister was sleeping with her unfaithful husband the night he died.

I'm looking forward to the next in this series. I was generous with the three stars, a middling rating based on the fact that this was not my kind of book and so I figured I might like it more if it was my kind of book. Driving through the western United States is one of my favorite things to do--and in Riding Shotgun I get to do it with a couple characters who have many wonderful stories to tell. A poignant tale filled with tears and laughter. In this adventure you get to meet vicious con-men, back shooters, back alley snipers, dirty lawmen, Indian attacks, suicides all this in one adventure. Note: The opinions shared in this review are solely my responsibility.

Also, because even though I am a horse person, I know nothing about foxhunting and hunt club and often there were long strings of terminologies used or situations talked about that only a fox hunter would understand.

After he is captured by the bandits, his shot-up stage is returned to the town by the gang in order to draw the authorities out of town. Having read Burnt Offering, one of my favourites, I decided to check out what other books Johnston has published which seems to be a long list of Westerns. The book also gives you a feel about being in a band, traveling countries and living the life. Westerns are not my strong point and have never really read this subgenre of fiction as I normally do not enjoy the genre when it is on film or as a television series but I found this book to be quite entertaining and kept me involved through its entirety. Mostly it's a contrived time travel story with a woman who's pretty nice in the past but pretty annoying in the present. For example Seth Rogers who ran with half brothers robbing, looting, gun for hire, left his half brothers who were killed by a bunch of Indians who left the reservations to kill white men who stole their lands, decimated the huge buffalo herds and pushed the Indians on these reservations to have total control of their lives.

Infidelity, single motherhood, family betrayal, and the thrill of the hunt in The author of Venus Envy takes you on a riotous ride back to one woman's future. His character development is wonderful as you really get to know these people. There's charm and humor and action, and a lead character that's fairly likable. Starting in the fall of 1962, Brown attended the University of Florida at Gainesville on a scholarship. What she doesn't tell him is that her reason for making the journey despite the danger has nothing to do with love.

This is the first book in a new family of series, but you always run across another member of the many Johnstone families in his books. Exciting, non stop action and great character development kept me involved until the very end. There's some wandering and there's some hold-ups and turn-arounds in this book, just as there are in any good road trip. Delong escapes through an attic and sabotages the getaway horses of Malady's gang. This is a trip worth taking with characters you won't want to leave behind. As far as the text itself, it contains many geographical, grammatical, and basic spelling errors which could so easily have been avoided with the aid of a competent editor or at least the use of spell check.
