While the film as a whole has some issues that do not make it work nearly as well as it can - never quite as funny as it could be and too often embodying the works it is critiquing by trying to pass off the romance as romantic initially - it nonetheless smartly shows the end result of Manic Pixie Dream Girls in cinema. With each word Calvin writes, Ruby changes. Out of desperation, the author rewrites her, turning the increasingly self-perpetuating girl into a codependent. At the mercy of how Calvin writes her, Ruby is the epitome of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. After talking with Harry, Calvin tries to write Ruby back to her original self, but his wording leaves her confused. And what happens to perfection when dealing with a mere mortal? There may not be a better script in all of 2012. Both men are narcissistic bastards.

For women, they seek to conform and only wind up losing themselves in the process, becoming unsure of who they are without him. Playful, joyful, and surreal the metaphors mix and I was never quite sure what was an extended hallucination and Jungian personality collapse and what was a playful imaginary realism. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonio Banderas and Elliott Gould, Ruby Sparks is an inspired coming of age story that proves true love can be magical. I found solace in the idea that Calvin was able to create the ideal person to be his partner; yet, even this ideal relationship was doomed to fail from the beginning, as love is inexplicable and magic, as the film states in one of the final scenes , and there is no way to 'plot' your own love story which Calvin finds out the hard way. But what should be a great thing has problems of its own, and as she becomes the vibrant woman of his dreams she takes on real life and suddenly Paul Dano is having to rewrite her life to keep her where he needs her. She is his puppet, subject to his every whim no matter what and only existing to provide him the satisfaction of having a girlfriend, not forming an emotional bond with them. It is possessive, horrifying, and yet brilliant.

Couldn't ask for a better end! Ruby finds them and believes Calvin is cheating on her; the ensuing confrontation proves she is not a figment of his imagination. Becoming rather chilling at this point, we see to the degree that it harms Ruby to have Calvin constantly changing her demeanor or mood. Not long after, Ruby pops up in his kitchen one morning, exactly as he described. In short, she completes him. Great fun from two well connected young film makers. Salinger, but I have witnessed a rare miracle. No longer natural or filled with the proper anxieties, joy, or sadness, the romance feels rather sinister with Ruby only there to please Calvin exactly how he desires.

At a party, Calvin bumps into Lila, who as it turns out, is also a writer, a soon-to-be-published one, which may account for their break-up, since the viewer can make the reasonable presumption that the female novelist was thriving in her craft, while the once-celebrated author found himself being surpassed by his protege, a simultaneity worsened by his miring in a bout of protracted writer's block. It is not cute to watch some one-dimensional female character race around after a guy and change on his whim throughout the film. Face-to-face with an actual relationship with his once-virtual girlfriend, Calvin must now decide whether to pen this love story or let it write itself.

Once she begins to express this sentience, it is back to the typewriter for Calvin to correct this issue. In a sense, people are reading Ruby, and each person perceives her differently, thereby changing the original meaning of the girl in ways that the author never intended. His therapist tasks him to write a page about someone who likes his dog, Scotty. In Stranger than Fiction, the professor tells Harold to do nothing. As with any stock character, reliance upon the Manic Pixie Dream Girl in romantic comedies quickly became derided for their unrealistic portrayals of women, the lack of knowledge on the part of the writer on how to write a woman, and simply lazy reliance upon a stock character. This seems to me not so much a love story or a commentary on male-female power relationships as it does a treatment of the question of how much control the writer has on his imagination and on reality. The female lead is glowing and ecstatic and changes so completely in her role as Ruby that she carries the film away over her shoulder and runs away with it. They fight, and Ruby tells Calvin that he cannot stop her from doing what she wants. Not only does he fatefully lack understanding of women at all, but he doubles down and seeks to control them. If he wants her to be sad, she is sad. I like the story and the premise-the execution-the laugh out loud funny-and the way that it gently points out that relationships have dynamics and aren't easy-even if you could get your wish of being able to control all that the other person does.
