The subplot concerning the feud between Lisbeth and Camilla is equally dull and the final showdown is so implausible that almost makes you laugh. China claims most of the resource-rich waterway, a major global shipping route. In my mind no one could come anywhere near capturing the magic that Stieg produced. Plus, all the scheming and politicking are barely sketched and not at all that compelling. The pace, the depth, the characterization, and the plot all suffer from a hazey idea that seems to just hypothesize itself as read.

It is clear the author favors Mikael, no doubt because he can easily relate to him. Gabrielsson claims to be the only person suitable to continue the series, as she was involved in some parts in the original trilogy -though not in the writing process itself- mainly having to do with some of the characters and locations used in the novels. The thing is, fair readers, that ship has sailed. For months now Salander has been closing in on her target.

. The story barely hangs together, and one mourns the absence of the dynamism of Lisbeth - the electric computer communications - and least of all Plague, whom I dearly miss. One gets the distinct impression that the author is out of his league in this series. But when a cyclist comes across a corpse in Mount Tabor Park on the eastern side of Portland, Archie suddenly has a new case to focus on. The minister of defense whom Blomkvist is investigating once survived a notorious Mount Everest climbing expedition in which others died. As such Lagercrantz has managed to create a very current story that reveals one or two things about his own career. For events where we anticipate large crowds, wristbands may be required in order to join the signing line.

The plot is twisty but masterfully spun by Lagercrantz. During the last bunch of novels he suffered because the magazine he runs with Erika Berger was only doing so-so. It begins with the discovery of Mikael Blomkvist's number at Millennium magazine in the pocket of an unidentified homeless man who died with the name of a government minister on his lips. And of course at nearly every turn, any single woman under 45 just hops in bed with him. Blomkvist, at extreme risk to himself, tracks down his old friend and will protect her as far as he can. But the police soon came to suspect Quincy Miller, a young black man who was once a client of Russo's. There just wasn't enough Lisbeth Salander, who is probably my favorite character of the 21st century: brash, bold, brilliant, and probably, psychotic. One of those is being wrong-footed by the internet — and not despite of it.

She is as ticked off as ever, and with troll factories, crooked Swedish pols and Russian mafiosos on the loose, she has plenty to set her off. Personally, I was positive from the beginning as I'm in favor of bold writing experiments like this one. There are lots of strands to the story that are woven together well. Yes, Lisbeth is still kick-ass but there no longer seems to be this sense of the girl. Lagercrantz can write thriller and mystery fiction and that aspect of the book flowed well, at times. It was not just her highly intelligent and odious father, Zalachenko. Lisbeth has a secondary role here, and even though her conflict with her sister Camilla is built from the early pages, she is mainly busy with hacking in order to help Mikael to uncover the truth about a suspicious suicide of a foreign man who was once a guide at Mountain Everest.

Lagercrantz tries to connect the book's plotline with those of the previous two but even that is unsuccessful as the result seems -more or less- forced.
