Tom Ripley is the protagonist but he's far from a hero. Highsmith reads like a mannerly Jim Thompson, especially once things start going off the rails. Having read the book, the movie will likely be less sensational; but the promise of being able to view the beautiful scenery on my television screen has me greatly anticipating watching this regardless. She is wonderful at writing psychologically creepy thrillers, and that is relayed nicely in this production. Tom envied him with a heartbreaking surge of envy and self-pity. I will not give much of the plot away but suffice it to say, there is murder involved, there is a police hunt across Italy, and there are various close encounters between Tom and other characters where I was just on the edge of my seat to find out how it would resolve. The Ripley in this book was fucking boring. We get to follow Tom on a mission, which he is bound to fail because the whole idea is ludicrous from the start. I wait for his films with childish anticipation. Ripley is a 1955 psychological thriller novel by Patricia Highsmith. It does give Tom a new scene, tho, in which he can try and become something, become someone. Well narrated by Kenerly who succeeded in giving Ripley the required furtive, paranoid internal voice, alongside the more open and naive public facade. Anyway, I knew Highsmith wrote Strangers on a Train so I decided to take a crack at it. This probably isn't going to sound good, but I feel for Tom Ripley.
