What begins as a professional relationship develops into a friendship as Del shows his grouchy charge that life is worth living. It's a story that sticks with you and you'll feel a little more hopeful about the world when it's over. The Upside hails from Neil Burger, director of Limitless and Divergent. If you haven't watched the original and don't have issues with one of the actors, you might just like this movie. I suggest seeing both, this movie and The Intouchables. What begins as a professional relationship develops into a friendship as Del shows his grouchy charge that life is worth living.
Are Americans so afraid of subtitles, that they have to make their own versions of movies? All in all, The Upside looks like a near-identical remake of The Intouchables, with an American bent. I loved the original French film and I'm not one of those people who are upset when an American film company remakes a foreign film. I had no clue this is a remake, but we really enjoyed this movie. The Upside is an American film directed by and written by Jon Hartmere. . The film premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and was supposed to hit theaters in March of 2018.
Give it a chance--I'm glad we did! Despite coming from two different worlds, an unlikely friendship starts to blossom as Dell and Phillip rediscover the joy of living life to the fullest. Yet if they can bridge their differences, they may just discover a rare breed of friendship — and teach each other to live again. . I was expecting funny, emotional, hilarious. I think Kevin Hart had to make a believable transition, and walk a line where the audience expected him to be funny, but we soon see he has quite a dramatic side that has to be convincing, while maintaining his ex-con history, and convince Cranston, the quadraplegic who is basically waiting to die, he still has a lot more to live for.
I love Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. This one was fun, as well - the social issues were American as the social issues in the French film were. But the movie was originally a Weinstein Company film, and the Harvey Weinstein scandal resulted in the film being pulled from release. I think Hart's performance was subtle when it needed to be, and Cranston conveying the complexity of a character using only his facial expressions without being able to move a muscle was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie.
The story of the unlikely outsider changing the lives of people who have given up on life in one way or another, is not new. Those two had the perfect chemistry for the story. While I prefer my favorite movie, the Intouchables, French with English subtitles, or dubbed, this movie included the same irreverence, comedy, and drama that the original 2011 movie had. It's a nice retelling of the story. Filming began in Philadelphia in January 2017. There may have been just a couple of weaker moments, than the movie this movie was based off of, The Intouchables French.
Well written, well acted, well directed. He decides to hire Dell, a struggling parolee who's trying to reconnect with his ex and his young son. Philip is a disabled white billionaire, who feels that life is not worth living. This is not the case of The Lion King, which was inspired by an obscure Japanese cartoon, and a wider audience got a chance to known the story. The Upside has actually been finished for a while, having debuted at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie had beautiful cinematography, good editing and was long enough to have time to tell a good story. In addition to Cranston, Hart and Kidman, the film also stars Julianna Margulies, Aja Naomi King, and Tate Donovan. I've been wanting to see this movie for so long! There was excellent chemistry between Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman. At one point, Paul Feig was set to direct, but that never came to pass. It's an uplifting film, not preachy and it doesn't have a depressing ending like some of these sorts of films have.
My hopes were that this movie was what I was expecting. . To help him in his day to day routine, he hires Del, an African American parolee, trying to reconnect with his estranged wife. To help him in his day to day routine, he hires Del, an African American parolee, trying to reconnect with his estranged wife. . I did read complaints that a disabled actor wasn't hired for Cranston's role and I understand that - but Hollywood is in business to make money and Cranston is a big name.
There is little explanation as to why an ex-con was hired instead of the 90 people interviewed before him, but the answer becomes clear as the story progresses. Phil is quadriplegic, a grief-stricken widower, and, like Dell, running short on hope. I'm surprised by all the negative reviews. I strongly recommend this movie as well as the original. I laughed a lot at the interactions Dell Scott Kevin Hart had with all the staff and for Phillip Lacosse Bryan Cranston and there was a real sweetness to this movie, also.
