This may be one of my top 10 reads so far this year, and I'll definitely be purchasing the rest of the series. So i'm starting by saying that i love strong female roles, the type of woman that in face of danger, fight even if they dont know how, they try! That said, this is also a terrific film from a filmmaking point of view; wonderful camera work, in your face documenting, and intelligent editing. I had book hangover for months after reading Auryn Hadley's Rise of the Iliri series books 1 thru 6, I finally decided to try When We Were Kings and was sucked in instantly. I enjoyed the characters, the dynamic of the gladiator arenas, and just the general plot line. I really enjoyed the whole world of the gladiator and watching Leyli's character grow from a pampered princess whose only purpose in life was to be married into a warrior. When We Were Kings took more than 20 years to reach theatrical screens due to legal disputes, but when it was finally released in 1996, it was universally acclaimed, winning many major awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. I tore through this and read it in a day, might have to pace myself for the next one.
