They meet the next night, and she says that he does not know the terrible things she has done. It's the perception of women in society that crosses all boundaries along with life in a politically repressed regime. He drives a tail-finned Ford Thunderbird, its chrome gleaming in the bright sun, the car carrying so many powerful associations with it, of cool-ness, of Americana, of mobility, of status. Be a good boy, or else … But these are undercurrents only, the subterranean basement of the film's psyche. Break free from that gaze however, and you may come to discover that the illusion, no matter how sweeping in the moment, is a skeletal construct of the imagination, existing only within the mind.

I have always loved a good, offbeat vampire movie such as the original Let The Right One In. Amirpour takes on a lot of issues in a subtle way. Arash comes home to find Hossein, deep in withdrawal, hallucinating that the cat is his dead wife. There is a little boy wearing a ragged coat Milad Eghbali who is a witness to everything, an innocent bystander to the corrupt and horrifying events of Bad City going on right before his eyes. Sheila Vand is phenomenal at the mystery girl in the chador. The seemingly insatiable appetite that the general public has for the blood suckers continues to mystify me. Amirpour has a great feel for that, merging the events onscreen to the song choice in a way that feels inevitable, in a way that opens up the scene.

The Girl is a vampire who targets men, specifically men who are mean to women. The shadows are so pitch-black that she is able to stalk the streets in her full chador practically undetected. Arash and the woman drive off together but he pulls off to the side of the road, angry and undecided about what to do. She stands motionless in the background, a shrouded, staring figure. For the most part, though, Amirpour helms the ship confidently and with a lot of love and care. Later, he goes to a costume party at a night club dressed up as Dracula, where he is seduced by Shaydah into taking one of the pills he is selling.

Most modern horror films employ the latter to get a very surface level rise out of the viewers, often losing the whole point in effective horror elements. Fed up with his father, Arash gives Hossein money, drugs, and the cat, and kicks him out of the house. In short, this is the type of motion picture that goes over like gangbusters at film festivals priding themselves on interpretive material from unconventional global filmmakers, yet mainstream audiences have little use for. They are found by the woman, who kills Hossein. It is an eerie sequence of predator and prey.

Amirpour lets the images do all of the work for her, a huge strength of the film. Counterpoints argue that the vampire theme is entirely irrelevant. Perhaps it is appropriate, seeing as how the titular girl is a part-time vampire, that the movie is as draining as a bite to the neck. Finally a movie that shows exactly what filmmaking should be about. The Pimp thinks she might be a prospective streetwalker and invites her back to his place, turning up the techno music, laying out lines of coke on the table. Most of the movie is constructed from moments, not really full scenes, but from long, lingering looks into this world and at these characters captured by a camera that is often as still as the energy onscreen.

After demeaning aging prostitute Atti, Saeed sees a girl in a chador walking alone on the street and brings her home. However, Arash still gets into his car with the Girl and they drive off together. When I say purpose, I mean utilizing the benefits of shooting a film in black-and-white such as shadow effect, the use of lighting to highlight particular characters or objects, and to allow the viewer to focus on picture complexity like characters and dialogue without visual distraction. They have a couple of scenes together, two in particular, one in her basement dwelling place and one out by a power plant, that rank as two of my favorite sequences in any film this year. As she is gathering up her things, the cat appears and Arash realizes that she had something to do with his father's death.

There is a rhapsodic catharsis in a moment like that, the stasis of all that came before suddenly releasing itself in a whoosh of emotion. The setting - Bad Town - is the type of bleak, lawless industrial town where a vampire could prey for a long time before moving on. Shot on a shoe-string in gorgeous black and white, this is funny, dead-pan, creepy, punky, sweet, sly, smart, violent, sexy, mysterious, loaded with style, and the most off-beat celebration of feminism and girl-power I may have ever seen on screen. As I said, it is surreal and absurd at times but yet this is one film that totally will captivate you. I won't spoil the film by telling details about each and every character, suffice it to say that they are well layered and complex. Strange things are afoot in Bad City.

The cinematography is glamorous black-and-white, crisp and specific, with light from the lamp-posts and car headlights refracting and fuzzing across the screen in a blurry line. The Girl kills a vagrant while walking alone. At one point, returning from a costume party where he went as Dracula , he runs into her on a lonely deserted street. Having gotten lost while wandering home alone, Arash encounters the Girl on the street. The vampire - you love her. At one point, she skateboards down the middle of an empty dark street, her chador flowing behind her like gigantic black bat wings. There are a lot of catchy Iranian pop songs, and a couple of sequences are built explicitly around the song used as underscoring.

The woman gives Atti the payment Saeed owed her. Well, this proved me dead wrong. There are moments that stand alone, images both familiar as though seen in a dream or a deja vu , and yet never presented before in just such a way: a black-veiled woman standing on the other side of an empty parking lot, barely perceptible through the gloom, surrounded by nothingness, a figure from a nightmare. She is an exotic beauty underneath a black cloak. Atti brings the Girl to her place and they have an introspective conversation.

There is a whirling disco ball spinning above, throwing its lights across the grime. Overall this is an interesting film, which, the premise is pretty self-explanatory. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night is a subversive horror tale in which role reversal makes for an interesting shift in the usual power balance so predominantly present in the genre or most genres for that matter. The Iranian ghost town, home to prostitutes, junkies, pimps, and other sordid souls, is a place that reeks of death and hopelessness, where a lonely vampire is stalking the towns' most unsavory inhabitants. Because she is in a chador, one can make all kinds of political and social connections with that storytelling device: she is an avenging angel of dominated and scorned womankind.
