I'm happy that this was my first and I really enjoyed it. While studying children's literature as part of my Masters program, we had to choose a book that we had read in elementary school. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. As for our lead, Kit? My daughter and I did a team reading on it, since she needed to read a book and discuss it for school. In fact, it feels like the filmmakers had very little understanding of their audience nor any respect for them.

The ending seemed a little rushed when I read it this time, but the book still entertained. The threat to young girls might be just a touch more accurate. But, for the most part, details you may wanna know, which would enhance your investment in Sierra, Ashley, or Izzy? I actually didn't read this one as a kid but can imagine it would have been slightly more thrilling if I was still a thirteen-year-old smuggling scary books into the house buried deep in my backpack. To be that person who formerly, when you went to a theater's box office, or when you went to Blockbuster, could say this is good, this you'll like if you are into that, or simply don't waste your time. The young women are taught arithmetic, literature, art, and music.

But for Kit one word only described it when she got there: Evil. On the day school starts, Kit understands that only four girls are going to study. Time has demonstrated that Duncan, author of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Killing Mr. Once again, if you like the one, you will like the others. The only part I did not like in the story was the ending. Blackwood is no Collinwood, but there's a gentle horror to it. It reminded me a lot of classic gothic horror films like House of Usher and House on Haunted Hill and I loved Lois's writing! While exploring the labyrinthine corridors of the school, Kit and her classmates discover that Blackwood Manor hides an age-old secret rooted in the paranormal.

I didn't think I'd like it. Yes you might say that it has the feeling of a 90s' movie, but this is the reason we can not enjoy it. Kit is dropped off at Blackwood Hall by her parents who either cannot or will not see the obvious clues that danger lurks there. Lois Duncan had a bit of a revival when I Know What You Did Last Summer was made into a horror movie. But then again, perhaps they are. Spanish director Rodrigo Cortés has a knack for depicting the macabre, and while the subject matter of ghoulish happenings in ominous old estates isn't original, it's still the sort of fright that teens will enjoy experiencing together.

A classmate read the book, and the rest of us checked it out as soon as the previous person returned it. I remember finding the book in a local library and discovering that Lois Duncan had been busy since writing Down A Dark Hall. It's amazing what twenty five or so years and an adult sensibility can do to shatter the memory of a long ago wonder of literature. Could you imagine being sent to boarding school as your mom leaves for her European honeymoon with her new husband? A diabolical character who appeared to be the main ghostly antagonist was given almost no screen time, which left me to wonder just who he was and what he had to do with anything. Lynda discovers she can sketch a detailed portrait.

Slowly the girls start going mad and if you like that sort of thing, you will love this! It would also work for Ghost, Haunted Houses, Genre: Horror, Supernatural, Gothic, Terror in a Small Town and Classic Horror. I remember I used to think of Kit's dad, and hoped that mine was watching over me just like hers watched over her. Although written at the level of teen readers—there is some violence, but it's not graphic. Kit, her friends except Lynda , the professor, Madame Duret and Jules all got The story was interesting and it kept me reading until the very end and I finished it at 1am and it was a school day! She would come to me, kindle in hand, a look of pleading in her eyes and ask for Gallows Hill or I Know What You Did Last Summer or Summer of Fear. In the book, she was the one who got the police and fire crew to return to the school. Which, for some, is a welcomed opportunity and others, just another hell.

In the original book there were only 3 other girls besides Kit. To a critical thinker, Down a Dark Hall is one of the most implausible books I've ever read keep in mind it's my first foray into Young Adult fiction. As for the acting, Uma Therman does her best but her french accent makes her look out of place because, come on. Despite other reviews calling Down a Dark Hall heavy handed in it's imagery, I found it beautiful. To the initial blood-freezing description of the mad, internally burning mansion that is the school, to Kit's dawning dread that the school has only accepted four students. It moves you in ways that make you want to look up the name of the pieces.

Maybe, even longer than that. I noticed its availability as a Kindle e-book a couple months ago and decided I wanted to re-read it. We learn about Veronica and Kit the most. Kit is surprised to find out that only four other young women Veronica, Izzy, Ashley, and Sierra are enrolled at the school, which is housed in a large, dark mansion with a restricted wing the students aren't allowed to enter. Overall: Mixed Divisive The main issue with Down a Dark Hall is that it focuses almost solely on the actresses most people know, and everyone else just fills the roles from the book. The school is big, elegant, foreboding, empty, and she can't help herself -- she keeps thinking the word 'evil.

You only have to suspend your belief when it comes to the actual supernaural part - not over how stupid the heroine is etc etc anyway, in this case Kit is an awesome heroine. And that Duncan has created a terrifyingly realistic story out of frankly supernatural happenings is remarkable. It dawns to them that they weren't randomly chosen, each of them posses a rare hidden personality that the authority, mainly the headmistress Madame Duret required. As you may gather from the title, this is a dark little book. This I used to sneak Lois Duncan books home from the library when I was in middle school. This was a teenage favorite of mine, and I was reminded of it a few days ago by another book.
