I think you are phony. They were extremely astonished to hear during the midnight military news bulletin, some seven and a half hours later, that Hitler had committed suicide. Playing on our good nature of giving and never taking. Be warned that there are several, kinda graphic scenes of childbirth if you're squeamish like me. It was just those fifty pages in the middle that needed tweaking, a lapse in action and a focus on the romance that wasn't really needed. Anke helps deliver babies in a concentration camp and is eventually assigned, with the promise of her family's safety, to aid in the care of Eva Braun, Hitler's paramour, up to and through her delivery. I understand that this is pure fiction and the Tattooist of Auschwitz is true life.

The details are stupendous and it shows thorough research into the Berghof and the life of Eva Braun and Adolf Hitler. Anke has no idea if she will survive this never ending war. The jaw has never been seen in public. The Author has really done her homework with the research. The memoir, penned by Gisella Perl, is the firsthand account of the time its author spent as an inmate gynecologist. Mandy Robotham obviously has excellent experience and begins the story explaining her profession. What if it was Hitler's child? That being so, Anke is caught in a terrifying dilemma, torn between her duty as a midwife to bring a living child into the world, as well as protect her family, who will die if she does not cooperate, and the crushing pressure of others who hate the Nazi regime, and her own beliefs.

In my opinion, I felt it was unnecessary. Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun did not commit suicide. He had them placed in separate confinement. The book is intriguing and definitely keeps your attention. Adolf Hitler did not shoot himself as we are told. However, she and her helpers made footprints of the babies and cut a lock of their hair as a token for their mother so the child would not be forgotten.

Nothing really happened for a good chunk of the novel. In April 1945, upon completion of these alterations, the two victimized men were brought to the Kurfuerstenstrasse building to be held until needed. I found the story around her other imprisonment captivating on a different level entirely. That gave her time to turn her job over to a friend and to say goodbye. It would create a feeling that is extremely uncomfortable, called cognitive dissonance. For a debut novel this was extremely well done! While I enjoyed the first few chapters, I found it very difficult to connect with the characters or story.

Mandy Robotham just pulls you into the story until you feel you are right there with them. She was Strong-willed and Loyal To The End Eva Braun throughout the course of her relationship showed commitment and loyalty to the Nazi party leader and his cause. This story is interwoven with flashbacks to Anka's time at Ravensbrück. She did not differentiate between Germans and Jews to help. What is completely different about this book is the perspective which is told from Anke's point of view.
