McCandless concludes that true happiness can only be found when shared with others, and he seeks to return from the wild to his friends and family. Two chapters that could have provided some insight into his hero are wasted because Krakauer sounds like a religious fanatic, with McCandless as his unknowable God and Krakauer as the I'm-not-worthy follower. It's not that I take issue with the telling of Alex's tale I found his two-year journey to be interesting and somewhat surprising , it's that Krakauer seemed bent on clearing Supertramp's name. So I wondere I first read Into the Wild ten years ago when it first came out after finding out that parts of it are set in Carthage, Miner County, South Dakota pop. Four months later, a party of moose hunters found his decomposed body. He didn't eat for days until somebody felt sorry for him and fed him. Though he obviously lives in a way that very few do, and particularly very few who grow up with the opportunities he has, the driving force behind his behavior is not unusual. In addition, he describes at some length the grief and puzzlement of McCandless' parents, sister Carine, and friends.

Because author Jon Krakauer presents the events of Into the Wild out of chronological order, establishing what happened when can challenge the reader. I think it's entirely possible he was both. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild. The book works wonders on different levels, it deals with non fiction in a dramatic storytelling way, like an adventure novel, but also stays as close as possible to the facts and truths recovered from Chris's diary. I don't really need to defend Chris. He tries hunting, not very successfully. When I get the chance, though, I head to the mountains, to the wild.
