Sanditon may be the best of all the Austen novel completions and sequels there are over 80 at present. I really liked Charlotte as a heroine. For by the twelfth chapter in her four previous novels, Austen had already introduced all the major characters and set the plot in motion; alliances have been made and battle lines set; young people have already fallen in love. So no, I can't fault Dobbs for trying. Sometimes the characters struck me as too outspoken and it was really the only thing that bothered me while reading. And sure, the style was a little bit off.

It's not very Jane Austen! Even if it turned out marginally better I wasn't expecting much , I doubted I'd be able to separate it from the crap that filled the other book. By the end of the 11th chapter, though, there was no real indication of where the plot would go, except for using other Austen novels as a guide seems reasonable , so most of the plot is by the other lady, as well. The work of Austen is fragmentary and whilst it offers an insight into intriguing new directions for her as an author, it's not a developed concept. We can expect: Beaches and balls, romance and intrigue, fortune hunters and heart breakers, assembly rooms and bathing machines and much, much more! Unlike a novel such as, say, Wives and Daughters, where only the ending is left unfinished, there was a middle and an ending to get through in Sandition. Characters enthuse about gaslights and other inventions just about to make it big. She is the mum of two children but she tends to keep her private life private.

Charlotte, our heroine, reminds me of Catherine Morland for some reason and the most is made of the setting of a small coastal town looking to attract tourists. She also befriends the shy Miss Lambe and tries to avoid the confidences of Clara Brereton and steer clear of the repulsive Sir Edward. Not one of her greatest, perhaps, but even second-tier Austen is worth five stars. But then I thought, Maybe I could just embrace it? The main character, Charlotte Heywood, is rather passive and undeveloped.

I guess I'll never really know what Jane Austen would have written unless we meet in As I read this book, I couldn't help but wonder what Jane Austen would have done with it if she had lived. In fact, anyone who manages to give readers another book by Austen deserves acclaim. As the plot moved on I felt it moved further and further away from an Austen novel. Though found innocent, she could, if proved guilty, have been sent to a penal colony in Australia. I love Heyer, but Austen and Heyer are very different vibes. The most well-drawn characters, interestingly enough, are the comical ones. Wow, that girl had it bad. The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself. And for their deficiencies in this seventh novel, I do apologize.
